Trash Talk: Foley officials discuss options during temporary recycling hold
At the beginning of April, Foley announced it would be putting a temporary hold on recycling pickups. This is due to the method of pickup. Whereas trash is collected three days a week with the use of an automated side loading truck, recycling is picked up one day a week via manual methods. To reduce the risk to city employees who handle recycling cans, the decision to put the collection on a temporary halt was made. “Do we have the capacity to pick up the garbage in place of the recycling?” asked Council [...]
Foley first responders making efforts to keep city safe during Stay-At-Home order
The climate of our world has changed over the past month as COVID-19 has led Alabama Governor Kay Ivey to issue a Stay-At-Home order throughout the state in order to stop the spread of the virus. This has also led local first responders to begin dealing with situations that were not issues before the pandemic began. Stay-At-Home implies that citizens are to stay in their homes as much as possible. However there are exceptions that allow essential workers to continue to travel to work and families to make trips to the grocery store [...]

After a number of setbacks, Foley’s Fern Avenue extension connecting Hwy. 59 and the Foley Beach Express will open on Monday, April 6 at 8 a.m. “We are pleased to offer our citizens another east/west alternative between Highway 59 and the Beach Express. Foley temporarily suspends recycle program
Foley is operating with essential-only activities as of Tuesday, March 31, following Gov. Ivey’s guidelines issued on March 28 that non-essential activities and businesses be closed to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This affects Foley’s recycle program, which is temporarily suspended. Although inconvenient for residents, Foley’s recycle service is picked up manually, which presented a potential point of transmission that had to be addressed immediately, according to city officials. For now, residents are encouraged to place recyclables in the regular green trash bins until the city is able to restart the recycle program. [...]

Garbage collection will continue as normal, but recycling will be suspended for now and bulk pickups may take longer to collect. Sanitation changes: recycling
Beginning Tuesday, March 31, Foley will no longer collect recycling. Recycling is collected manually, which makes it a source of disease transmission. Garbage will be picked up as usual, as the process is automated. Garbage cannot be picked up if it is placed in recycle containers. (Won't work on the truck). Garbage placed in bags beside the can cannot be picked up. (Won't work on the truck). The city takes this measure to keep employees safe. We encourage you to follow all preventive guidelines to keep you and your family safe during this time.
