Please observe burn ban – a message from the Foley Fire Chief

As our weather continues to improve and storm debris is being gathered, the Foley Fire Department is asking all area residents and property owners to refrain from open burning for safety and compliance with the current burn ban. Baldwin County is one of 12 counties currently under the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) burn ban effective from May 1 through October 31 each year.  The purpose of this burn ban is to combat the formation of ground-level ozone and the generation of fine particulate matter during the warm weather months. The City of Foley has faced many challenges in 2020. Hurricane Sally was one challenge that won’t soon be forgotten by its residents. Fortified Buildings Weather Sally

It’s easy to tell which homes have Fortified roofs in the wake of Hurricane Sally, quips Roy Wright. The ones that don’t are color-coded with blue tarps. Wright, who is CEO of the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, based in Charlotte, doesn’t find much humor in the wake of Hurricane Sally. But he finds satisfaction in seeing that the Fortified roof and building standards his group developed and has been promoting for a decade or more have proved themselves. Wright toured Baldwin County’s coastal areas this week to see how the [...]

City of Foley approves 2020-21 fiscal year budget

The City of Foley has approved its 2020-21 fiscal year budget. As the end of the 2019-20 budget draws near, city officials report that while underbudget, the city has weathered the storm. “Even though we’ve gone through this year with COVID-19 and the closure of a lot of our businesses for weeks during the springtime, it looks like if you combine these four taxes [sales, gas, lodging, and rental] and compare 2020 to 2019, we’re going to be just about flat, maybe slightly above,” said City Administrator Mike Thompson. Debris everywhere

The question on everyone's mind is when will all this debris be taken away? Contractors are working across Foley, from early morning until almost dark, seven days a week, to remove the unprecedented amount of debris from downed trees left in the wake of Hurricane Sally. On Sunday, Sept. 27, a total of 39 of the huge trucks, averaging 9.8 loads per day, were hauling away debris. The seven day collection total was 102,000 cubic yards.
