The Foley City Council will meet in a joint work/regular session on Sept. 19 at 4 p.m. at city hall. During the meeting, the council will: Conduct three public hearings on whether to declare weeds at three locations a nuisance and order abatement at all three sites. Those are 407 W. Foley park renamed to honor Florence B. Mathis
The city park located in Aaronville on South Cedar Street will be dedicated to Florence B. Mathis, a long-time principal and teacher at Aaronville High School. The dedication will be held in the park on Saturday, Sept. 17, at noon. The two-acre park contains a pool, pavilion, swing set, restrooms and play structures. Florence B. Mathis was the first teacher at Aaronville School, and later became Baldwin County’s first black female principal. She was an inspiration to students and made a huge impact on the lives of many. The Foley Planning commission will meet on Sept. 14 in a work session and again on Sept. 21 in a regular session. Both meetings will be at 5:30 p.m. in council chambers. During the meetings, the planning commission will: Hear a plan for two duplexes to be built on a .33-acre lot on West Begonia Avenue from applicant David Green. N. Cypress St. from Jessamine Ave. to E. Laurel Ave. will be closed beginning 8 a.m. on Sept. 12 through 3 p.m. Sept. 16. The closure is necessary to construct drainage and roadway improvements in this area.

Alabama tourism spending on track to hit record $24 billion by end of year
Gov. Kay Ivey announced Tuesday that Alabama is on pace to set a record in tourism spending by the end of the year. “It looks like the industry is going to exceed $24 billion — with a ‘b’ — this calendar year,” Ivey said. During the annual Alabama Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Auburn, Ivey said since 2013, Alabama’s tourism industry has more than doubled, growing from about $11 billion to now more than $24 billion, barring any unexpected downturns.
