FOLEY — Work is complete on major improvements at the intersection of Baldwin County 12 and Alabama 59 in Foley.

Contractors and engineers confirmed on Friday, Dec. 19, that the project is finished. The improvements are designed to enhance traffic flow, safety and long-term durability at one of the city’s busiest intersections.

Project upgrades included widening the roadway, extending culverts, adding new lighting and upgrading traffic signals. New left- and right-turn lanes were added on Baldwin County 12, and right-turn lanes were constructed on Alabama 59 to improve traffic movement through the intersection.

The existing wire-mounted traffic signals were replaced with mast-arm signals, which are better equipped to withstand severe weather conditions.

The Alabama Department of Transportation administered the project, which was funded through a $2 million Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program II (ATRIP) grant. The total project cost was $1.83 million, coming in under the grant amount and requiring no additional city or state funding.

Construction began in February. During part of the project, traffic on the east side of the intersection along Baldwin County 12 was temporarily detoured to allow crews to complete roadway widening and culvert extensions.

City officials thanked motorists and nearby residents for their patience during construction and noted that the completed improvements will provide long-term benefits for drivers traveling through the area.
