FOLEY – Foley residents will choose the leaders who will guide the city for the next four years during the upcoming municipal elections.

The election will take place at the Foley Civic Center between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 26. All Foley voters will cast ballots at that location.

While local elections often see lower turnout, the decisions made by City Council and the mayor directly affect roads, public improvements, and the direction of community growth.

Four of Foley’s five City Council districts will have contested races in the 2025 election. District 3 Councilman Roddy Burkle is running unopposed, as is Mayor Ralph Hellmich in his bid for re-election.

In the 2020 census, Foley’s population was 20,335, with 16,086 residents of voting age. That year, only 1,260 votes were cast in the citywide race for mayor.

Mayor Hellmich encouraged residents to make their voices heard.

“People need to please get out and vote,” Hellmich said. “We have one voting place for all of Foley. There won’t be long lines like in a presidential election. Only about 12% to 15% of people vote in municipal elections, and that’s not acceptable. We need more people to participate.”

As of July 27, 2025, Foley had 20,193 registered voters, according to the Alabama Secretary of State’s Office. Of those, 17,095 are considered active, while 3,098 are inactive—meaning they have not voted in the past four years.

Residents can check their voter registration status at the Alabama Secretary of State’s website. Information on City Council district boundaries is available at cityoffoley.org/voting.
