FOLEY – A healthy democracy depends on citizen participation, and Foley leaders are encouraging residents to make their voices heard by registering to vote.

The Foley City Council has proclaimed Tuesday, Sept. 16, as National Voter Registration Day. Mayor Ralph Hellmich presented the proclamation to members of the Baldwin County League of Women Voters during a recent council meeting.

“One of the most important things in our country is the ability to vote,” Mayor Hellmich said. “It’s something we all need to support. If you know someone—especially young people—who is not registered, encourage them and help them learn how to vote.”

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to voter education and engagement, is hosting voter registration drives throughout September. Upcoming events include:

  • Community Resources Fair – Thursday, Sept. 18, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Foley United Methodist Church

  • Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermen’s Market – Saturday, Sept. 27, from 8 a.m. to noon

League member Jane Tyler said the group’s mission is to help every eligible citizen participate in the democratic process.

“We encourage all eligible citizens to register to vote, verify their registration status—which we can assist with at our booths—and take an active role in our democracy,” Tyler said.
