FOLEY – The City of Foley is expanding traffic calming measures by standardizing speed limits in another area of the city to improve safety and consistency for drivers.

The Foley City Council has given preliminary approval to a plan to standardize speed limits in the city’s southeast quadrant, with a final vote scheduled for an upcoming meeting.

Mayor Ralph Hellmich said this project follows similar efforts completed earlier this year in the southwest quadrant.

“We’re mirroring what we did in the southwest quadrant,” Hellmich said. “This is another part of Old Foley where we wanted to standardize speed limits to help ensure consistency throughout the area.”

The area affected is bordered by Alabama 59 on the west, South Pecan Street on the east, U.S. 98 on the north, and East Azalea Avenue on the south.

Under the proposed plan:

  • All east-west streets in the area will have a speed limit of 20 miles per hour.

  • South Juniper Street and South Cypress Street will remain at 30 miles per hour.

  • All other north-south streets will have a speed limit of 20 miles per hour.

  • All alleys in the area will continue with a speed limit of 10 miles per hour.

In May, the Foley City Council approved a similar ordinance for the southwest quadrant, located west of Alabama 59 and south of U.S. 98, as part of the city’s ongoing efforts to improve traffic safety and flow.
