FOLEY – New street lights will help Foley drivers at several intersections around the city.

The Foley City Council has approved the installation of new street lights at several locations around the city to improve visibility and enhance traffic safety.

One of the new lights will be installed at the intersection of James Road and Baldwin County 12. The city added a four-way stop at the intersection in early 2025 after traffic was rerouted during construction of improvements at Baldwin County 12 and Alabama 59.

Mayor Ralph Hellmich said the intersection is currently poorly lit and some drivers are still adjusting to the stop signs.

“This is a dark intersection, and any safety improvement we can make is important,” Hellmich said. “This is one of these newer four-way stops where drivers need to be especially attentive.”

Baldwin EMC will install an LED street light and a transformer on an existing pole at the intersection.

The lighting improvement comes as Foley and Baldwin County continue to work together on a joint project to extend James Road south from its current endpoint at Brinks Willis Road toward Gulf Shores.

The council also approved the installation of a street light at the entrance to the Meadow Run Estates subdivision. City Engineer Taylor Davis said the Meadow Run Estates Homeowners Association requested the light, which will also be installed by Baldwin EMC.

In addition, a new street light will be placed on an existing pole near 525 Hamilton Boulevard. Riviera Utilities will install that light.

City officials said the new street lights are part of ongoing efforts to improve safety and infrastructure throughout Foley.
