FOLEY – Foley’s water towers will soon shine again as part of a new city project to enhance visibility and civic pride.
The Foley City Council has approved the “Light Up the Tanks” initiative, a joint effort with Riviera Utilities, to install LED lighting on two of the city’s elevated water tanks. The lights will highlight Foley’s name and logo, which were previously visible but went dark after recent repainting projects removed the original lighting infrastructure.
Mayor Ralph Hellmich said the project brings back an iconic feature of the city skyline using modern, energy-efficient technology.
“This is a partnership project,” Hellmich said. “Our logos on the water tanks were lit at one time, but after they were painted, the lighting system was removed. This upgrade allows us to restore that visibility with far less energy use.”
The new LED system will include fresh wiring, conduit, and eight light fixtures mounted along the handrails of the tanks to illuminate the city branding.
A third tank near Underwood Road and Baldwin County 24 will not be part of the lighting project. Mayor Hellmich noted that this particular tank does not stand on legs like the others and is not easily visible from the roadway.
With LED technology, the city will not only restore a familiar landmark but do so in a way that’s cost-effective and environmentally conscious.
