FOLEY — Plans are moving forward to improve traffic flow along Michigan Avenue in Foley through a series of intersection upgrades.

The City of Foley will construct traffic circles at Michigan Avenue’s intersections with Cedar Street and Juniper Street. In addition, Baldwin County will upgrade the signalized intersection of Michigan Avenue and Hickory Street, which falls under county jurisdiction. That project will also include the addition of dedicated turn lanes.

At its most recent meeting, the Foley City Council approved plans for engineering work on the Cedar and Juniper traffic circles. This phase will include the use of ground-penetrating radar to identify any existing utility lines.

Mayor Ralph Hellmich said the city is nearing the start of construction.

“We’re very close to starting the Cedar Street traffic circle on Michigan,” Hellmich said. “We’re doing final engineering work now and hope to begin construction this fall.”

Work on the Juniper Street intersection is expected to follow once all engineering and pre-construction steps are complete.

“These infrastructure projects have been several years in the making,” Hellmich said. “They’ve been long awaited, and now they’re moving forward, just like several others we have underway.”

The mayor also noted that Baldwin County is progressing with its plans for the Michigan and Hickory intersection, which could also break ground this fall.
