National police dog competition takes place in Foley
FOLEY – Police K-9 units from across the United States took part in national competition in Foley during the week of Sept. 26 through 29 with local teams winning several top awards. More than 100 police dogs and their handlers took part in the 2023 United States Police Canine Association PD1 K9 Nationals. Council to vote on expanding Foley sanitation fleet
FOLEY – The Foley City Council is scheduled to vote Monday, Oct. 2, on a resolution that would allow the city to expand its garbage collection services The council’s work session and regular meeting will begin at 4 p.m. at Foley City Hall. Midday Melodies returns to Heritage Park on Wednesday
FOLEY – Music will ring out in Foley’s Heritage Park each Wednesday in October when the city’s popular Midday Melodies lunchtime entertainment event resumes. The music will start at 11 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m. near the clock tower at Heritage Park. Midday Melodies is a safe, socially distanced event that will take place entirely outdoors in the park. Participants are welcome to bring picnic blankets or lawn chairs. Foley approves action on new hotel site
FOLEY – The latest hotel planned for Foley took a step forward Tuesday when the City Council approved the transfer of the property to the developer. In a special-called meeting, the council voted to sell the 2.19-acre parcel next to the Foley Farmers’ and Fishermen’s Market. The council scheduled the special meeting in order to meet a deadline for signing the transfer of the property. Developers plan to build a four-story Cobblestone hotel with 73 rooms. FOLEY – City officials are working on plans for improvements on the Foley Beach Express. The Foley City Council voted at its last meeting to approve work to prepare to widen the intersection at Baldwin County 12. The council approved spending $28,412 to move two electrical power poles owned by Baldwin EMC to allow for improvements at the site. FOLEY – Expansion of the Civic Center, a commercial-grade kitchen in the Farmers’ and Fishermen’s Market and other projects are some of the municipal improvements being planned for Foley. The Foley Planning Commission voted Wednesday, Sept. 20, to recommend that the City Council approve upcoming municipal projects for the next year. Foley reminding residents of recycling guidelines
FOLEY – Foley residents who take part in the city’s curbside recycling program could be getting reminders of what materials are acceptable if they put out items that do not fit the guidelines. Residents are putting more non recyclable material in the bins specified for recyclable items, Darrell Russell, Foley Public Works director, said. Foley approves grants for downtown improvements
FOLEY – More buildings in Foley’s historic downtown area are getting exterior improvements through the city’s grant program to improve facades. The Foley City Council has approved the latest two requests for facade grants. The council approved a facade grant for the South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce building on North Alston Street. The grant is for up to $14,820. The money will be used for a new door, awnings, brick and mortar work, chimney flashing and landscape work around the foundation. Foley council calls special meeting Tuesday
FOLEY – The Foley City Council has called a special meeting for Tuesday, Sept. 26 to discuss a real-estate transaction. The meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the City Council chambers in Foley City Hall. The only item on the agenda is a resolution that will allow Mayor Ralph Hellmich to sign closing documents for the sale of a parcel of property. The parcel is a 2.19-acre lot located in the former Wilson Pecan property now owned by the city.
Work starts on final phase of Juniper extension
FOLEY – The Juniper Street extension that will create a new Foley north-south route around much of Alabama 59 should be open before the end of the year. The intersection of Juniper Street and Miflin Road, Baldwin County 20, closed Monday, Sept. 18 to allow work to be completed.
