FOLEY – Heavy equipment turned into tools of fun and skill as public works crews from across Baldwin County competed in the first Baldwin County Municipal Equipment Rodeo, held Friday, Sept. 26, at Foley’s Graham Creek Nature Preserve.

Crews from Foley, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach took part in the inaugural event, showcasing their talents in unique challenges such as balancing a bowling ball with a skid-steer, maneuvering bulldozers through obstacle courses, and using an excavator boom like a giant golf club to putt oversized balls.

Orange Beach earned first place in the competition, followed by Foley in second and Gulf Shores in third. Interest is already growing for next year’s event, with additional cities expected to join.

“This is a chance for public works directors and crews from across the county to come together,” said Mike Chavers, Foley street maintenance superintendent. “We had folks from Fairhope and Daphne here as well, and everyone is looking forward to making this bigger and better next year.”

Foley Public Works Director Darrell Russell said the event also strengthened the teamwork that municipalities rely on during emergencies.
“It’s a chance to network, learn from each other, and showcase what our crews can do—all while having a good time,” Russell said.

For Gulf Shores, the event was an opportunity to highlight the expertise of public works employees.
“The public sometimes thinks public works is just a group of guys leaning on a shovel, and that is so not the case,” said Lee Galbreath, Gulf Shores streets supervisor. “This gives our folks a chance to show their skill and enjoy themselves.”

The event was supported by vendors including Thompson Tractor/Caterpillar, Beard Equipment, Perry Brothers Equipment and Parrish Tractor. Bill Patterson of Fat Boys Rub provided food, with proceeds benefiting Youth Reach of the Gulf Coast, a local Christian rehabilitation center for young people.
