The City of Foley will implement a slight increase in garbage collection rates to address inflation and rising operational costs since fees were last adjusted six years ago.

Beginning April 1, 2026, the monthly cost for the first residential garbage can will increase by $3.25, bringing the total to $23 per month. The rate for a second garbage can will remain unchanged at $16 per month.

The monthly sanitation fee includes weekly collection of household garbage, recyclable materials, yard debris and bulk items.

The city’s last sanitation rate increase occurred in 2019. Since that time, costs associated with waste collection and disposal have risen. The modest adjustment will help offset a portion of those increases while maintaining the high level of sanitation services residents expect.

Commercial collection rates for dumpsters will also increase by 50 cents per cubic yard for each collection. New commercial rates will also go into effect April 1.

The  Foley City Council approved the rate changes on Feb. 16.

Mayor Ralph Hellmich said the adjustment is designed to reflect a portion of inflationary increases while continuing to provide reliable service.

“We want to maintain the quality that the city expects for those services, but we all have lived through very inflated times in the last six years,” Hellmich said. “This change in price does not capture all of that inflation, but it captures some of it, and so it is adjusted to what keeps us whole and able to provide the service and not make money.”

The City of Foley appreciates residents’ understanding and continued support as the city works to deliver fair, equitable and dependable sanitation services communitywide.
