FOLEY – New street lights will soon enhance visibility and safety for drivers at several intersections throughout the city.

The Foley City Council has approved the installation of multiple street lights at key locations to improve nighttime driving conditions.

A new LED light will be added at the intersection of James Road and Baldwin County 12, where a four-way stop was installed earlier in 2025. The stop sign was added after traffic was rerouted during construction at the Baldwin County 12 and Alabama 59 intersection.

Mayor Ralph Hellmich said improved lighting is an important safety measure at this location.

“It is a dark intersection and every improvement for safety that we can make would be good,” Hellmich said. “This is one of these new four-way stops where people have to learn to be attentive.”

Baldwin EMC will install the new street light and transformer on an existing pole at the site. Foley and Baldwin County are also continuing work on a joint project to extend James Road south from Brinks Willis Road toward Gulf Shores.

The council also approved lighting improvements in two additional areas. A new street light will be installed at the entrance to the Meadow Run Estates subdivision at the request of the homeowners association, with Baldwin EMC handling installation.

Another light will be added near 525 Hamilton Boulevard on an existing pole. Riviera Utilities will install that fixture.

These upgrades are part of the city’s ongoing efforts to support safe and well-lit roadways for residents and visitors.
