FOLEY – Plans for a new walking trail in Foley are moving ahead, offering residents and visitors another opportunity to enjoy the outdoors while connecting key areas of the city.
The Foley City Council has approved the design phase for the Schreiber Trail, which will run through the Wolf Creek headwaters restoration area. The trail will connect the Wilbourne Antique Rose Trail near Alabama 59 to North Pecan Street, covering about 2,000 feet.
Leslie Gahagan, Foley’s sustainability and natural resources director, said the new trail will follow the section of Wolf Creek restored to a natural state over the past decade.
“For several years, we’ve been talking about creating the Schreiber Trail that connects the Antique Rose Trail back to Poplar Street along Wolf Creek in the restoration area,” Gahagan said.
The trail will be named in honor of former Foley City Councilman Robert Schreiber.
Work to restore this section of Wolf Creek began in 2011. The city transformed what was once a narrow, straight ditch into a meandering stream bed approximately 80 feet wide, planting native vegetation to improve water quality and create a healthier ecosystem.
Councilman Charles Ebert III noted the success of the restoration project and the benefits the new trail will bring.
“The trees we planted in that area have come up really well,” Ebert said. “Now, we’ll have a nice walking path through there for the community to enjoy.”
