FOLEY – Drivers in downtown Foley might have noticed that the large flagpole that stood near the intersection of Alabama 59 and U.S. 98 for 20 years has been removed.
The 80-foot flagpole was cut down and laid on the parking lot near The Book Exchange. The pole was erected in 2003, replacing a 60-foot wooden pole on the same site.
The pole was replaced by a taller structure in 2023. The new pole is 90 feet tall and located on the east side of Alabama 59 about one block south of the previous location. The city flies a 20-foot by 30-foot flag on the pole 24 hours a day.
Foley is also developing a small park on the site of the new flagpole.
Foley officials had discussed removing the old pole and placing it in another location. The cost, however, was considered too high to make the move economical. Officials were told that the old pole could be removed intact at a cost of $5,500.
