A public parking lot in downtown Foley will be temporarily closed next week as the city completes paving and related improvements at the site.
The lot, located on the southwest corner of the intersection of Alabama 59 and U.S. 98, will be closed Monday, April 13, through Friday, April 17, according to City Engineer Taylor Davis.
“It’s the parking lot in the middle of downtown,” Davis said. “They plan to pave that next week. Right now, we’re going door to door to adjoining businesses to let them know.”
Mayor Ralph Hellmich said the paving work will be coordinated to avoid disruptions to nearby businesses and will not interfere with ongoing repairs to the adjacent building.
“That’s our primary focus,” Hellmich said. “We’ll make sure we work around this so we don’t cause any issues. We want to minimize disruption to businesses, and once it’s complete, it will be a Class A parking facility that will serve those businesses well.”
Following paving and striping, city crews will install landscaping features, including trees, shrubs and flower beds within designated islands. Streetscape enhancements will also be added along Alabama 59 to improve the appearance of the area.
The project includes resurfacing and striping approximately 2,300 square yards of parking area, along with the installation of concrete curb stops. Drainage improvements will also be made to reduce runoff and enhance environmental performance.
The City of Foley purchased the property in 2025 as part of ongoing efforts to support downtown growth. The improved parking facility is expected to provide convenient and accessible parking for customers, employees and visitors, helping strengthen the city’s downtown business district.
