FOLEY – The City of Foley is restricting commercial truck traffic in a southwest neighborhood to reduce the number of heavy vehicles using residential streets.
The Foley City Council voted to prohibit commercial trucks with more than two axles from traveling on Park Avenue between South Hickory Street and South Pine Street. The change is intended to prevent large trucks from using neighborhood routes to bypass construction detours.
Mayor Ralph Hellmich said that closing the intersection of Hickory Street and Michigan Avenue has shifted more vehicles onto nearby streets.
“Now that we have the Hickory Street intersection closed, there’s a lot more traffic going through there,” Hellmich said. “We want to make sure that the trucks don’t do that.”
The restriction applies only to large commercial trucks with more than two axles. Private vehicles, delivery trucks, and smaller trailers will still be allowed access to the area.
The Hickory Street and Michigan Avenue intersection has been closed since September for the first phase of a Baldwin County improvement project. The work includes upgrading traffic signals and adding dedicated turn lanes in all four directions. The intersection is expected to remain closed until Jan. 2, 2026.
The City of Foley partnered with the Baldwin County Commission on the project through an intergovernmental agreement. Under the agreement, Foley funded the survey and design plans, which were completed by Thompson Engineering. Baldwin County is overseeing construction and ensuring the work follows the approved plans.
