FOLEY – The traffic signal at the intersection of Baldwin County 12 and Alabama 59 will be turned off temporarily on Wednesday, May 21, to allow for important infrastructure upgrades.

The signal will be shut down beginning at 9 a.m., while crews install a temporary signal. Work is expected to be completed by 4 p.m. that day. During the shutdown, Foley Police officers will be on site directing traffic to ensure public safety.

This work is part of a larger intersection improvement project managed by the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT). Crews will connect new power lines and remove existing signal poles to make way for new turn lanes being added to the intersection.

Officials from ALDOT noted the timing of this work is planned to occur before local schools close for summer and before seasonal beach traffic increases.

Currently, eastbound County Road 12 remains closed, but ALDOT expects to reopen that section by the end of May.

Planned intersection improvements include:

  • New right-turn lanes on Alabama 59 North and South

  • New left and right-turn lanes on County Road 12

  • Culvert extensions

  • Signal system upgrades

The $1.83 million project was awarded to McElhenney Construction Company, LLC, and is scheduled for completion in fall 2025.
