The City of Foley is marking a milestone in American history by planting 250 trees throughout the community in 2026 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of the United States.

On Thursday, April 23, crews from the Foley Public Works and Horticulture departments planted oak trees along South Chicago Street as part of ongoing improvements in the area.

The tree planting on South Chicago Street is tied to preparations for the opening of the new Foley Public Library building this summer. Enhancements in the two-block section between East Orange Avenue and U.S. 98 will include new pedestrian walkways, expanded green spaces and additional street trees. The project will also feature brick pavers and decorative columns designed to complement the improvements previously completed on Chicago Street near Heritage Park.

The citywide tree initiative is one of several efforts planned to recognize the nation’s semiquincentennial in 2026. Additional events will include a patriotic concert by the Baldwin Pops orchestra in late May and a special celebration during the final Music and a Movie event of the season on May 22 at Heritage Park.

City officials are continuing to develop plans for additional commemorative activities throughout the year. More information on upcoming 250th anniversary events in Foley will be released as details become available.
