FOLEY – Foley officials are moving forward with plans to improve traffic flow along Miflin Road, a busy city commercial corridors.

Foley Assistant City Engineer Taylor Davis told City Council members that planning for the project is now complete. The work will include removing the existing asphalt median lane from Alabama 59 to Juniper Street and replacing it with a landscaped grass median, lighting, and concrete curbing.

“This project will remove the median turn lane to help reduce congestion in the area,” Davis said. “We also reviewed crash reports and studied the traffic patterns. The new design will eliminate many of the conflict points drivers encounter now and create a safer, cleaner flow of traffic.”

The project will also include a mid-block U-turn location within 1,000 feet of Alabama 59 to allow vehicles to safely cross the roadway.

City officials have met with business owners along Miflin Road to review the plans and gather feedback.

“All of the concerns have been addressed, and we don’t expect opposition from the businesses along the route,” Mayor Ralph Hellmich said.

The project is expected to take three to four months to complete. While some lane closures may be necessary, Miflin Road will remain open during construction.

Hellmich said the goal is to finish the work before the start of the tourist season.

“We plan to bring this back to the council in the coming weeks,” Hellmich said. “If approved, we can go out for bid and complete the project during the slower time of year.”
