FOLEY – The City of Foley is continuing its commitment to creating a more walkable and connected community by expanding its network of pedestrian walkways.

The city is now seeking bids for a new sidewalk project along North Cedar Street that will extend existing walkways from West Fern Avenue to West Peachtree Avenue.

This new section will not only improve pedestrian access but also address key infrastructure needs. The project includes drainage improvements, such as installing new lines and covering existing ditches, to accommodate the new sidewalks and enhance safety along the route.

“This is a significant investment in pedestrian infrastructure,” said Mayor Ralph Hellmich. “The North Cedar Street project will be more complex due to the drainage work, but it’s essential for safety and long-term accessibility. We’re committed to continuing these projects, just like we do with our roads and intersections.”

The North Cedar Street extension builds on recent progress. In 2024, the city completed a sidewalk extension from Mel Roberts Park to West Fern Avenue. Plans are also in development to extend the walkway network east from Cedar Street to connect with other pedestrian routes throughout Foley.

The City Council has shown strong support for these efforts, allocating $1 million annually over the past two budgets to fund sidewalk construction across Foley.

Additionally, the city is working to bring the Mills Community into the pedestrian network. After residents voted to approve annexation in 2023, Foley began planning sidewalk connections to link the neighborhood with the rest of the city.

The city also secured an $800,000 grant through the state’s Transportation Alternatives Program, which funded recent sidewalk extensions along Alabama 59.

With each new project, Foley continues to invest in a safer, more walkable future for residents and visitors alike.
