Sidewalk improvements are continuing across the city as Foley expands pedestrian access along some of its busiest streets, including Alabama 59 and North Cedar Street.
The city will install a new sidewalk along the east side of North McKenzie Street (Alabama 59), extending from East Orchid Avenue north to East Section Avenue. The project will connect sidewalks to the site of Local and Company, located in the historic building constructed in 1935 as the original Foley National Guard armory.
Mayor Ralph Hellmich said the work represents another step toward creating continuous pedestrian routes through much of downtown.
“We’ve approved the sidewalk up to Section Street along Highway 59,” Hellmich said. “That gets us up to Local and Company along the highway, and then we’ll have connectivity along the road up there.”
The project will also include the installation of street lighting along the route from East Violet Avenue to East Section Avenue. Riviera Utilities will install 19 lights to improve visibility and safety.
In addition, the city is continuing sidewalk construction on North Cedar Street. The Foley City Council has approved engineering work to extend the sidewalk from Peachtree Avenue to Fern Avenue. The project will include modifications to accommodate the existing drainage system along portions of North Cedar Street.
City plans call for extending the sidewalk north to Fern Avenue and eventually east to McKenzie Street. Once complete, the Cedar Street and McKenzie Street sidewalks will be connected, creating an expanded pedestrian network serving much of Foley.
