FOLEY – The City of Foley is making significant improvements to Heritage Park, with the latest addition being an ornamental metal fence near the intersection of Alabama 59 and U.S. 98.
The Foley City Council approved the installation of the new aluminum fence near the Welcome Center, replacing an existing six-foot wooden barrier. According to Jeff Phillips, Foley’s construction projects manager, the upgrade will enhance the park’s aesthetics and improve visibility.
“This is part of our Heritage Park improvements project,” Phillips said. “The new fence will create a more open feel and provide a clear line of sight between 59 and 98, making the park more inviting.”
Additional Heritage Park Upgrades
The fence replacement is just one of several ongoing enhancements at Heritage and John B. Foley Park:
-
Extended Walkways: A new concrete walkway is being poured from the Centennial Clock Tower to North Chicago Street, eventually connecting with the new extension of East Jessamine Avenue. This will provide a continuous path linking the pedestrian bridge over Alabama 59 to City Hall.
-
Street Closures for Construction: Portions of North Chicago Street will be closed through April 1 to accommodate these improvements.
-
New Gate and Wall: A decorative gate and wall section are being built at the East Jessamine intersection, further enhancing the park’s entrance.
-
Upgraded Lighting: The city is replacing old wooden light poles with sleek black poles featuring energy-efficient LED lighting for better illumination.
-
Modernized Restrooms: Crews recently demolished the outdated restroom facility next to the Welcome Center, which has been replaced with a larger, more modern structure.
Preserving Foley’s History
The Welcome Center, located at the northeast corner of Alabama 59 and U.S. 98, originally served as the Foley Public Library from 1927 to 1984 before its remodel in 1962. These park improvements aim to preserve the area’s historical significance while enhancing its accessibility and appeal.
