On Thursday, February 8th, 2024, officers and detectives from the Foley Police Department were alerted to two men who were involved in the passing of counterfeit currency at stores inside the Tanger Mall.
The ensuing investigation revealed that Michael Anthony Washington (41) and Derick Melendez Ned (47), both from Tampa, Florida, had engaged in a counterfeit currency scheme at several stores. The two would purchase small valued items and pay with counterfeit $100 bills and receive real currency as change. When arrested, the two were found to be in possession of an additional 40 counterfeit $100 bills. They were also found to be in possession of property from additional stores that were not in Foley.
Both Washington and Ned were charged with one count each of Organized Retail Theft and three counts each of Possession of a Forged Instrument, all felonies. Additionally, Washington was charged with one count of Tampering with Physical Evidence, a misdemeanor.
This case is still under investigation and additional charges may be forthcoming.
If you believe that your store was a victim of this counterfeiting scheme, please notify your local law enforcement agency.
