A new pedestrian path along 9th Avenue will connect existing sidewalk systems in south Foley, improving access to schools, neighborhoods and other amenities.
The Foley City Council approved a professional services proposal to design a pedestrian path along 9th Avenue from South Pine Street to Alabama 59. Construction is expected to begin in early 2027.
The approximately 1,400-foot path will extend from Alabama 59 to the northeast corner of the Foley High School campus, connecting two existing sidewalk systems.
Foley City Engineer Taylor Davis said the project will link walkways previously constructed with funding from the federal Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP).
“We completed the TAP grant sidewalk in front of the high school on 9th Avenue two or three years ago, and we’re just now completing the TAP grant on 59. So this would connect over there to it,” Davis said.
The city is also nearing completion of a sidewalk along Alabama 59 between Pride Drive and Azalea Avenue. This final section is part of a larger effort to provide approximately four miles of pedestrian walkways along the highway, extending from Miflin Road (Baldwin County 20), south of Tanger Outlets, north to Peachtree Avenue.
The new 9th Avenue path will connect those highway sidewalks with existing walkways serving Foley High School, the Aaronville community and Florence B. Mathis Elementary School.
The project will also strengthen connections to the Cedar Street sidewalk system, which extends approximately three miles from 9th Avenue north to West Peachtree Avenue.
The Foley City Council recently approved additional work to extend the Cedar Street sidewalk system to Village Square Boulevard, further expanding pedestrian connectivity throughout the city.
