As part of the nationwide celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, Foley has reached its goal of planting 250 trees throughout the city in 2026.

The tree-planting effort is one of several projects underway as Foley joins communities across the nation in commemorating the semiquincentennial, marking 250 years since the founding of the United States in 1776. More than 250 American flags have also been placed throughout the city as part of the celebration.

Throughout the year, city crews have planted trees on rights of way, municipal properties and other public locations. The America 250 initiative complements Foley’s ongoing efforts to expand and maintain the city’s tree canopy.

Foley horticulture and public works crews regularly plant and care for trees throughout the community, while also encouraging residents to participate in beautification efforts. During the city’s annual Arbor Day celebration in February, Foley employees and volunteers distributed more than 700 trees for residents to plant across the area.

Among the America 250 projects, crews planted oak trees along South Chicago Street as part of the streetscape improvements surrounding the new Foley Public Library, which is scheduled to open later this summer. Additional trees were planted at locations including the new Public Works Campus on North Poplar Street, which opened in May.

The city is also decorating public spaces with flags, bunting and other patriotic displays in preparation for Independence Day celebrations. Residents are encouraged to join in by displaying patriotic decorations at their homes and businesses.

Several upcoming community events will continue the America 250 celebration.

On Thursday, June 18, Foley Main Street will incorporate patriotic themes into its “Hello Summer” Third Thursday event. Participating downtown businesses will feature red, white and blue pinwheels and distribute patriotic tote bags.

The Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermens Market will celebrate the semiquincentennial during its annual Corn Festival on Saturday, June 20.

This year’s corn-eating contest will feature a patriotic challenge in which contestants must eat two ears of white corn, five slices of red watermelon and a cup of blueberries. The contestant who finishes first will be declared the winner. A children’s division will also be offered.

The festival will again include the popular Corny Dad Cook-Off, featuring three fathers preparing signature dishes using corn as the featured ingredient. Festival attendees will sample the dishes and vote for their favorite. Each voting ticket will include a miniature American flag.

The Foley Railroad Museum is also offering an American Revolution-themed scavenger hunt on Event Train operating days throughout the summer. Activities take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Participants can pick up a scavenger hunt form at the Model Train Exhibit and search for hidden items located throughout both the exhibit and the museum. The first 250 guests who successfully complete the hunt will receive a commemorative America 250 pin.

Visitors to the museum can also participate in the America 250 Visitor Response Wall by sharing their thoughts and reflections on the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Recent semiquincentennial activities included a patriotic concert by the Baldwin Pops orchestra in May and a special America 250 celebration during the final Music and a Movie event of the season in Heritage Park.

Additional events are being planned throughout the year, including a Flags of Freedom self-guided tour at Graham Creek Nature Preserve.

More information on upcoming America 250 activities in Foley will be announced as plans are finalized.
