Foley is expanding its road resurfacing plan, adding more than a mile and a half of roadway to the list of streets scheduled for improvements in the coming year.
The Foley City Council approved an updated plan that includes resurfacing 1.54 miles of West Park Avenue between South Hickory Street and South Pine Street. The addition brings the city’s upcoming resurfacing project to a total of 6.3 miles.
Work on the project is scheduled to begin in October.
Asphalt Services submitted the lowest of six bids for the project at approximately $1.08 million, including the additional West Park Avenue work.
Mayor Ralph Hellmich said favorable asphalt prices allowed the city to expand its resurfacing program.
“We had very good engineering estimates,” Hellmich said. “When the oil prices go up, that usually drives up asphalt, but this allowed us to plan for this and included everything.”
In addition to West Park Avenue, the resurfacing plan includes work on Lakeview Drive from Carnoustie Drive to Baldwin County 12 and West Peachtree Avenue from North Cedar Street to Alabama 59.
An alley between West Orange Avenue and West Myrtle Avenue, extending from South Pine Street to South Alston Street, is also included in the updated plan as an alternate project.
